Nueva York, NY — La organización Renew Democracy Initiative (RDI) otorgó su máximo galardón, el Premio Héroes de la Democracia 2025, a la líder opositora María Corina Machado y al Presidente Electo Edmundo González Urrutia, durante su gala anual celebrada el jueves 3 de abril en Gotham Hall, Nueva York. El reconocimiento destaca su liderazgo valiente y la lucha extraordinaria del pueblo venezolano por la libertad y la restauración democrática.
Debido a la persecución que enfrentan por parte del régimen de Nicolás Maduro, ambos galardonados no pudieron asistir al evento. María Corina Machado permanece en la clandestinidad dentro de Venezuela y tiene prohibido salir del país, mientras que Edmundo González Urrutia se encuentra actualmente en el exilio. En su representación, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, hija de María Corina Machado, y David Smolansky, Subdirector de la Oficina del Presidente Electo en Washington D.C., recibieron el premio en el escenario.
Ana Corina ofreció un discurso conmovedor que recibió una ovación de pie por parte de los más de 260 asistentes, entre ellos filántropos, defensores de la democracia, disidentes políticos y líderes internacionales.
“El 28 de julio, el pueblo venezolano derrotó al régimen criminal de Nicolás Maduro. Los vencimos en las urnas—y lo demostramos al mundo,” afirmó.
“Esta no fue solo una elección. Fue el acto de resistencia civil más poderoso en la historia de nuestro país.”
“No somos víctimas. Somos luchadores. Y no nos detendremos hasta que Venezuela sea libre.”
En video dirigido al público presente, María Corina Machado envió un mensaje de fuerza, dignidad y determinación:
“Recibo este premio con profunda humildad y gratitud—en nombre del pueblo venezolano, que le ha mostrado al mundo lo que significa tener coraje.”
“Nuestra lucha no es solo por la democracia en Venezuela—es por los principios de la libertad y la dignidad humana que unen a todas las naciones libres.”
“Hemos pagado un precio muy alto, pero no tenemos miedo. Estamos decididos a terminar lo que empezamos—y vamos a vencer.”
Por su parte, el Presidente Electo Edmundo González Urrutia, también a través de un video, denunció la represión desatada tras las elecciones del 28 de julio y subrayó la urgencia de mantener el apoyo internacional:
“Ese día, el pueblo venezolano desafió a quienes portan las armas con la verdad y la razón,” dijo. “Desde entonces, más de 2.000 personas han sido detenidas. Todas son víctimas de violaciones graves a los derechos humanos y crímenes atroces de lesa humanidad.”
“Mi yerno fue arrestado en enero y hasta el día de hoy no hemos podido hablar con él.”
“Pero nada de esto puede extinguir el mandato popular y soberano del 28 de julio, que sigue vigente. El régimen está condenado al fracaso. Con el valioso apoyo de nuestros aliados internacionales, vamos a prevalecer.”
El Premio Héroes de la Democracia es la máxima distinción que otorga RDI, y ha sido entregado en años anteriores a disidentes y defensores de la libertad en las líneas de frente de la lucha contra el autoritarismo. Este año, el reconocimiento destacó no solo a dos líderes excepcionales, sino a toda una nación que desafió a la dictadura a través de la acción cívica y democrática.

Venezuelan Leaders Honored with Heroes of Democracy Award at RDI 2025 Gala
New York, NY — The Renew Democracy Initiative (RDI) honored Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-Elect Edmundo González Urrutia with the 2025 Heroes of Democracy Award at its annual gala on Thursday, April 3rd, at Gotham Hall in New York City. The award recognizes their courageous leadership—and the extraordinary efforts of the Venezuelan people—in the ongoing fight to restore democracy and freedom in Venezuela.
Due to ongoing persecution by the Maduro regime, both honorees were unable to attend. María Corina Machado remains in hiding within Venezuela and is barred from leaving the country, while Edmundo González Urrutia is currently in exile. In their place, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, daughter of María Corina Machado, and David Smolansky, Deputy Director of the President-Elect’s office in Washington, D.C., accepted the award on their behalf.
Ana Corina delivered a moving speech on stage, receiving a standing ovation from a crowd of more than 260 attendees—including philanthropists, democracy advocates, political dissidents, and global thought leaders.
“On July 28th, the Venezuelan people defeated Nicolás Maduro and his criminal regime. We beat them at the ballot box—and we proved it to the world,” she said.
“This was not just an election. It was the most powerful act of civil resistance in the history of our country.”
“We are not victims. We are fighters. And we will not stop until Venezuela is free.”
In a pre-recorded video message, María Corina Machado delivered an emotional tribute to the Venezuelan people and their unbreakable will to resist dictatorship:
“I receive this award with profound humility and gratitude—on behalf of the Venezuelan people, who have shown the world what courage looks like.”
“Our struggle is not just for democracy in Venezuela—it is for the principles of liberty and human dignity that bind all free nations together.”
“We have paid a terrible price, but we are not afraid. We are determined to finish what we started—and we will prevail.”
President-Elect Edmundo González Urrutia also appeared via video and reinforced the urgency of international solidarity and action. He called attention to the brutal crackdown that followed the election:
“On that day, the Venezuelan people challenged the arms bearers with truth and reason,” he said. “Since then, more than 2,000 political prisoners have been arrested. They are all victims of terrible human rights violations and heinous crimes against humanity.”
“My son-in-law was arrested in January and to this day, we have not been able to talk to him.”
“But none of this can extinguish the sovereign will of the July 28 elections, which remains as valid as ever. The Venezuelan regime is doomed to fail. With the valuable support of our international allies, we will prevail.”
The Heroes of Democracy Award is RDI’s highest honor, previously awarded to brave dissidents and frontline defenders of freedom. This year’s ceremony highlighted not only two extraordinary leaders, but a nation of millions who dared to challenge dictatorship through democratic action.
