Edmundo González Urrutia, president-elect of Venezuela, issued a statement in which he refers to the release of his son-in-law, Rafael Tudares. Here is the full statement:
The release of Rafael Tudares, my son-in-law, has finally been confirmed.
This past year has been marked by uncertainty, silence, and anguish, feelings deeply familiar to those who have endured the forced absence of a loved one. For that reason, this news brings relief, first and foremost, to his family.
But it would be a mistake to see this solely as a personal story. There are still men and women who remain unjustly deprived of their freedom for political reasons, without guarantees, without due process, and in many cases, without truth.
The truth is that these people should never have been imprisoned, and every additional day of unjust detention extends a violation that remains unresolved.
Rafael’s release does not erase what happened. On the contrary, it reinforces a demand that remains fully valid: freedom for all those unjustly detained and real guarantees that such abuses will never be repeated.
